“Impressive, remarkable, smoldering, an excellent artist with a flexible, dark voice of dramatic weight who added genuine human dimension to the story. Sterling silvery high notes, a creamy middle register and aristocratic bearing.” This is how the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post, Hollywood Reporter, Opera Today and the Washington Times have written about Uruguayan soprano María Antúnez.

Recent highlights include María starring an opera gala with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Montevideo and Mimi in la Boheme with The Charleston Opera.

In the past few seasons Antúnez has appeared in important stages such as the Kennedy Center in Washington, Los Angeles Opera, the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing, Teatro Nacional in Santo Domingo, Teatro Solis in Montevideo and the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, in roles like Mimi in La Boheme, Angelica in Suor Angelica, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Fiordiligi in Cosi fan tutte, La Contessa Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro and Queen Elizabeth I in Maria Stuarda.

Antúnez sung the title role in the world premiere of “Dulce Rosa”, an opera by Lee Holdridge, based on a short story of Isabel Allende. The Los Angeles Opera Orchestra was conducted by Placido Domingo with whom she has also sung in concerts.

Next season she will debut as Cio-Cio-San in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly with the Vero Beach Opera, and as La Duchessa di Bouffers in Cesar Cortinas’ L’ultima gavotta at the National Auditorium in Montevideo, Uruguay. She will also be returning as soloist with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra.

María lives with her husband, tenor Martín Nusspaumer and their daughter Amelia in Miami.
